History: Named after Visakha, the Hindu God of Valour, Visakhapatnam was once part of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka's vast empire. Later, it was ruled by the Andhra kings of Vengi, and other South Indian dynasties, including the Pallavas, Cholas and Gangas. In the 15th century, it became part of the Vijayanagar Empire. It finally came into British hands in the 17th century, after which it was developed into a major port.
 Description: The second busiest port in India after Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is rapidly becoming the largest shipyard in the country. It is an important industrial town and naval base as well. The town makes a convenient point from which to visit some of the beautiful beaches along the Bay of Bengal and  many picturesque temple towns of the northern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. An ideal destination, it caters to the religious minded, the Buddhist pilgrim, the fun-lovers and adventure-seekers. A number of beaches and a long stretch of road along the sea-shore up to Bheemunipatnam town, the second oldest municipality in the country, are a pleasure to experience. No trip to Vizag is complete without a journey at Araku, 110 km away, a lovely valley nestled amidst the high Eastern Ghats.     Navaratri: Come October, it's time for Navaratri, a festival celebrated across India with fervour. Navaratri is a nine-day festival and it is celebrated in different parts of the country in different ways. In Andhra Pradesh it is celebrated by hosting Bommala Koluvu, the Bengali's call it Durga Puja and the people in general term it as Navaratri. Though there are many stories associated with the festival, the most accepted one is the slaying of the demon king Mahishasura by the Goddess. The demon king who with the help of a boon from Lord Brahma and Shiva that no living being or God would be able to kill him, terrorised the three worlds and was finally slain by the all powerful Mother Shakti in the form of Durga on the Maha Ashtami Day.

The beautifully-carved 16-pillared Natya mantapa and the 96-pillared Kalyana mantapa bear testimony to the architectural brilliance of the temple. The image of the presiding deity, Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy, is covered by a thick layer of sandalwood paste.

This is the first of its kind in Asia. The aim of setting up of this museum is to create awareness among the public to know how the submarines work during wartime and how the crew takes action etc. 
    Araku - Hill Station: It is situated at a distance of 112 km from Visakhapatnam. A pleasant hill station famous for its scenic gardens with lush green nature, valleys, waterfalls and streams. The journey to Araku valley on the Eastern Ghats with thick forest on either sides is itself highly interesting and pleasant. The place is over 3200ft. high with a bracing climate. 
    The Botanical Garden at Padmapuram, Government Silk Farm with Mulberry gardens is the live examples to know the socio-economic conditions of the area.

    Indira Gandhi Zoological Park: Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, situated in between the National Highway -5 & Beach road, spreading over an area of 625 acres, exhibits about 700 animals belonging to about 89 species. The important attractions of the Zoo are Deer Safari, Nocturnal animals, Toy train, Shanty Sarovar view, Zoo van drive and Bay of Bengal view points.
