Araku Valley is a famous hill station located in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is located 115 km from the Vishakhapatnam district, close to the Orissa state border. This place lures people with pleasant weather, hills and valleys. The natural beauty of this valley comes alive with its rich landscape. The area of the valley is roughly 36 km and the altitude is between 600 and 900 m above the sea level. The journey to this place on the Ghat road with thick forests on either side is in itself interesting and pleasant. One can have a wonderful trekking trip. 46 tunnels and bridges will greet guest on the way. Rolling grass lands, lush orchards and pleasant climate make Araku Valley a delightful place.

    Visakhapatnam has a hot climate during summers, a pleasant winters and heavy rainy monsoons during June to September. Summers during March to May are oppressive and uncomfortable with temperature reaches a scorching level of 45°C or above and the high humidity level make the climate very sultry. Winters during December to February are somewhat pleasant and warm with temperature levels ranges in 18°C to 32°C.

    Most of the religious festivals like Deepavali (October) and Navarathri (October-November) are also celebrated here with much festivities and show. Tourism promotion festival Visakha Utsav during the cold seasons (December-January) is very attractive with the traditions and culture in the form of sport events, music and dance, food fair, exhibitions, arts and crafts.

  • Araku Orientation

    Vizag is an important industrial town and naval base as well. The second busiest port in India after Mumbai. Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is rapidly becoming the largest shipyard in the country. Vizag harbour is one of the natural harbours in the world. A temple, mosque and church are located on hills overlooking the harbour. The Vizag beaches, particularly the Ramakrishna Beach, are lovely and serene. The beaches are ideal for swimming and water sports. On the north of Vizag is this pretty cove, Lawson's Bay, ideal for swimming. Old Dutch museum and the drive to Bheemli are also very enjoyable.

    Itika Pongal is a renowned Hunting festival in the Araku Valley attended by the young and old alike with exceptional vigor and enthusiasm. A significant feature of this region is the rail route from Ananthagiri to Vishakhapatnam which includes the highest broad gauge track in the Indian Railways. The Coffee Plantations beneath the Valley offer a spectacular scene to the high spirited tourists. Shimliguda Railway is the highest Railway Station in Indian and is located at Araku Valley.

    Araku Tribal Museum :- The Tribal Museum in Araku Valley explores the tribal culture of Eastern Ghats. The Tribal Museum exhibits rich tribal tradition and several artifacts. One can see the tools used by the tribes and avail information about the social and cultural aspects of the tribal people. There is a stall in the museum where handicrafts items of the tribes are sold.

    Anantagiri Hills :- Anantagiri is a breathtakingly beautiful resort sheltered in the lush undulating ranges of the Eastern Ghats. It is considered to be a perfect head off to get away from the blistering summer months. Ananthagiri is perched at an altitude where the panoramic vista unfolds stunning viewpoints.

    Driving through picturesque coffee plantations the road to Anantagiri with its ups and downs on the Ghat route is literally enveloped with mango groves, waterfalls that gush and flow into the ravines. The Eastern Ghats rail route on this stretch is one of the highest broad gauge tracks in the world.


  • Gardens and Parks at Araku

    Shivajipalem Park  :  Covers around 3 acres of land and is open in the evenings. Main attractions are a  Skating Ring, three fountains and  beautiful gardens. Can also be a picnic spot.

    Indira Gandhi Zoological Park :  (Visiting days : Tuesday - Sunday) : Situated at a distance of 9 kms, it is being developed over an area of 600 acres.
    Timings : 9 am to 5 pm Entry Fee : Child - Rs. 2/-, Adult - Rs. 5/-, Car - Rs. 200/- with 5 occupants.

    Kambalakonda: Kambalakonda Reserve Forest, located not too far from the city in Degalagedda, close to the Indira Gandhi Zoological park.

    VUDA Park : This park is a heavy crowd puller and has a Dancing Musical Fountain, Boating facility, Skating Ring, Horse and Camel Riding.

    Tyda Park :- It is located 75 kms. from Visakhapatnam on the Araku road, Tyda is being developed with camping facilities at Jungle Bells to provide an enchanting experience in the wilderness to tourists. A home for a variety of wild mammals and avitauna, Tyda is ideal for viewing wild life and bird watching. Other attractions are rock climbing, trekking and targetting with bow and arrows.

    Mudasarlova Water Works and Park   :  Situated 10 km from the city. It is beautiful and the valley is framed by hills with a lake that supplies water to the city. There is also a scenic 18 hole Golf course belonging to East Point Golf Club.

    Kondakarla Ava
       : Situated in Achyuthapuram mandal, 48km from Visakhapatnam, Kondakarla is famous for its natural lakes attracting migratory birds in summer.

    Anantagiri : Situated half way between S.Kota and Araku Valley, it has extensive Coffee Plantations and numerous waterfalls like Tadimada waterfalls.

    Bheemunipatnam Beach :- Bheemunipatnam Beach is about 25-km from Vishakhapatnam and prime attraction of Araku Valley. The most important aspect of interest at the place is the beach, which is perhaps matchless for its beauty all along the east coast.

  • Must do at Araku

    While at Kakinada, hire a cab and go to Draksharama. An ancient Shiva Temple. A jyotirlinga. U can enjoy the ride with green fields around u for miles together. U can also visit Dwaraka Tirumala and while coming back u can also visit another Shiva Temple of ancient origins, at Bhimaeshwaram near Samaralakota. While going to Vizag by road u can visit Annavaram temple, where Lord Sathyanarayana Swamy resides. In case u r travelling by train, u can squeeze Annavaram while at Kakinada itself.
