History: Ranikhet has derived its name from Rani padmini, who was so enamoured by the place that she decided to stay there. The place is then come to known as Ranikhet, which means fields of Rani. Later British developed Ranikhet as army cantonment. Ranikhet is still a cantonment town and one can see soldiers in the area.

Description: Ranikhet is located in the northern state of Uttaranchal in the Kumaon hillsRanikhet, literally meaning 'the queen's fields' is just like a heaven on earth. It is situated 6000 feet above the sea level in Uttaranchal. Thick forests, deodar and pine trees in the foreground and an unending range of Himalayas sweeping in the background, Ranikhet is spell binding.

    Ranikhet has cantonment is spread across two ridges, first called the Ranikhet ridge is situated at an elevation of 5,983 ft. and the second, the Chaubattia ridge. Ranikhet becomes very cold in the winters and remains moderate in summers, and is best enjoyed from october to march. Ranikhet gets snowfall in the winter season, mainly in the months of december, january and february.

    Dwarahat: 38 km from Ranikhet a small town noted for its archeological and historical importance, is a nearby attraction in Ranikhet. Dwarahat has the attraction of ancient temples, Shakti temple at Doonagiri and Naithna devi temple are two of them.  It is located in the beautiful valley of the famous Ram Ganga River.

    Kalika: The small town Kalika nearby Ranikhet is known for its golf course and the famous Kalika temple.The Kalika temple is devoted to Goddess Kali and many devotees visit here to offer their prayers. A nearby attraction is a forest nursery which is worth visiting.

    Majhkhali: Majhkhali, a tourist’s enchanting destination for imposing natural beauty, is located on the Ranikhet. This place is abundantly blessed with the nature’s all gifts, hilly terrains, calm valleys, cool climate and captivating surroundings. The agriculture farm of Uttar Pradesh Government is located here. This is a nice place to spend the weekends and evenings.

    Sitalkhet: Located  28 km from Ranikhet Sheetalkhet (Sitalkhet) is a prime sought picnic spot with full of fruit orchards situated between Almora and Ranikhet, spectacular sceneries and bracing cool breeze.

    Tarikhet: Located 8 km from Ranikhet. This is a must place to be visited to get the feeling of the history of India and its independence.

    Upat: Located 5 km from Ranikhet. Upat is located in Ranikhet not far away from Sadar bazaar on Almora Road. The view of the Himalayan ranges and snow capped peaks from this enchanting. The area is surrounded by lush green forests densely populated with pine and oak trees.

    Nanda Devi mela, Shayaldeh mela, Dwarahat mela, Summer and autumn festivals, Nav Ratri festival in Hairakhan (Chinia Naula) is the famous festival in Ranikhet.

    Binsar Mahadev: It  is located 19 kilometres from Ranikhet. At an altitude of 2480 metres, the temple is surrounded by thick deodar forests. In the sanctum of the temple are idols of Ganesh, Har Gauri and Maheshmardini. The temple built by King Pithu in memory of his father Bindu is also called Bindeshwar temple.

    Jhoola Devi Temple: This secluded temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is seven kilometres from Ranikhet located on road to Chaubatia.

    Mankameshwar: Close to Nar Singh Maidan, built by the Kumaon regiment for military use in Ranikhet, is Manakameshwar temple.

    Hairakhan Temple: Four kilometres from Ranikhet is the famous temple of Hairakhan Baba.

    KRC Museum: KRC (Kumaon Regimental Centre) Museum, the museum established by Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army in 1970s, reveals the historical importance of Garhwal and Kumaon regiments. It showcases valuable materials like Rani Jhasi's silver scepters, documents and pictures related to Kargil War, a wireless field telephone used in world war –II by Japanese and Chinese rifles captured in1962 war.

    Chaubatia: Chaubatia essentially has fruit orchards, gardens and the Government fruit Research Centre. It is one of the largest horticulture gardens in the country spreading over 265 acres of land. There are 36 varieties of apples grown here of which four are exported.

    Bhalu Dam: Bhaludam, a nearby attraction of Ranikhet, is a small lake made artificially. The dam sight is blessed with natural beauties, panoramic views of the Himalayan mountains, enchanting calmness and scenic surroundings. The small but beautiful garden nearby the dam is marvelous.     Ranikhet has a cool climate all through the year. Summers (march to may) are very pleasant with a temperature range of 8°C to 22°C. Winters are chilly cold and have a temperature range of 3°C to 7°C. Snowfalls are common during winters. Monsoons during june to august have an average rainfall.
