Jodhpur the capital of Rajasthan, was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the Rathore ruler of the kingdom of Marwar. Strategically located on the overland trade route, it soon became a flourishing trade centre. Its merchant class, known as the Marwaris, have retained their entrepreneurial skills and continue to run many of India's leading business houses. The glorious and elegant monuments, temples and gardens of the city are a reminder of the past and depict a multi-faceted grandeur. Jodhpur is divided into two sections, the Old City, well fortified by a long high wall and the New City where you can find restaurants and big markets. Sightseeing places are: Mehrangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Sardar Bazaar, Mandore Gardens, Balsamand Lake and Gardens and Kailana Lake. The Mehrangarh Fort rises dramatically out of the rugged mountainside and is surrounded by the blue washed houses that dominate the city's landscape.

Women and ladies fast and offer prayers to the serpent king cobra and sprinkle turmeric and vermilion on live snakes and offer rice, milk, bananas and sweets to snakes while praying and invoking the blessings of the snake god.      Achal Nath Shivalaya : The Achal Nath Shivalaya temple in Jodhpur was built in the 16th century. It was built on the orders of Nanak Devi who was the queen of Rao Ganga. A great devotee of Lord Shiva Nanak Devi built this religious place in Jodhpur in 1531. It was completed on 21st May 1531. It is famous for its Shivling known as the Ganga Bewari. A large water reservoir surrounding the shivling gives it its unique name. Shivling is the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva.

    Mehrangarh Fort : Spread over an area of 5 sq. Km, the stunning Jodhpur fort in red sandstone has seven gates and preserves one of the most beautiful structures in Rajasthan. The Mehrangarh Fort rises dramatically out of the rugged mountainside and is surrounded by the blue washed houses that dominate the city's landscape. Started in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the fort compound has various later structures that are more ornate and decorative - the Phool Mahal(1730-1750), Takhat Mahal(1843-73), Moti Mahal(1581-1595) and Jhanki Mahal. The royal apartments within the fort now form part of an outstanding museum.

    Umed Garden:(A beautiful place for entertaining children and as well as adults) Viceroy Willingdon inaugurated the zoo in the garden. At the time of its inauguration, the Umed garden had lion, tiger, zebra, ostrich and an emu. There was separate cage made for monkeys. A 'Walk-in Aviary' in the zoo was constructed in the garden in 1978. The aviary houses different types of birds, local, African and Australian parrots, ducks, rabbits etc. All the birds and animals are kept in their natural environment. In the Umed garden, is a large cage for bears opposite the aviary. Also there are pigeons, crocodiles, foxes, deer, lions, leopards, etc,. Children as well as adults very often visit the garden with equal interest. The garden is known  to mesmerize people with the nature's beauty in which it abounds. Also, it is a good place to educate children in relation to nature. Kaylana Lake : (Picnic spot) An ideal picnic spot for tourists, this lake offers a breathtaking view of the sunset.     Sardar Bazaar in the heart of the old city is a fascinating cluster of shops selling silver jewellery, lacquer bangles and clay figurines. 
    The market near the clock tower is the place for some good bargains. The traditional jewelry like the bajuband, bala, gajra and gokhru are some of the famous products of Jodhpur.

    Mehrangarh Fort Museum : Mehrangarh Fort Museum is considered one of the most well preserved museums in Rajasthan. The entrance to the museum is through Suraj Pol. To the right is Palki Khana with the richest collection of palanquins including Rajat Khasa, the lotus-shaped silver palanquin used by the royalty. Next to Palki Khana is the Howdah Gallery depicting the lavishly crafted howdahs (a howdah is a two-compartmentalized wooden seat, mostly covered with gold and silver embossed sheets, which was fastened on the elephant's back). On the first floor is the sprawling Umaid Mahal displaying paintings of Jodhpur school with a strong Mughal influence. Next on this floor is Phool Mahal which treasures miniature paintings depicting the 36 moods of musical ragas or Ragamala. Takhat Mahal has glass Christmas tree balls which were added in the 1930s. Sardar Vilas displays fine woodwork. Jhanki Mahal was used by the women of the royal zenana who could peep through latticed stone screens to see ceremonies and other happenings at the courtyard. The museum also displays a rich collection of musical instruments and costumes used by royalty.
     Balsamand Lake Palace : Balsamand Lake Palace heritage hotel in Jodhpur is a very famous heritage mansion in North India. Balsamand Lake Palace exemplifies perfect traditional Rajputana architecture. The Balsamand Lake Palace heritage hotel, built out of special Jodhpur red sandstone, was originally conceived as the summer resort of the Jodhpur royalty.


  • Gardens and Parks at Jodhpur

    The parks and gardens have been developed to attract the tourists. There are quite a few beautiful Jodhpur gardens for the purpose of sightseeing. 
    Umed Garden : It is spread on an area of 82 acres. The famous Umed garden of Jodhpur, Rajasthan was developed by Maharaja Umed Singh. It is named after him . The garden has five separate gates around it to facilitate entry to the garden from different directions. It has lush green lawns with beautiful roses and other seasonal flowers. Also inside the garden, is a museum, towering Ashoka trees, artistically designed fountains, a library and a zoo.
     Nehru Park Jodhpur : The park is covering an area of 14 acres. Nehru Park was developed as a park for children. This park was inaugurated on 7th September 1966 by the then Chief Minister, Shri Mohan Lal Sukhadia. The park reflects the beauty of nature through its fountain, pond, swings, flowerbeds, trees and plants, etc.


  • Lake at Jodhpur

    Balsamand Lake : The Balsamand Lake is an artificial reservoir, built in the 13th century, which provided drinking water to the city.
     Kaylana Lake : Location :8 kms to the west of Jodhpur on the Jaiselmer road. Pratap Singh, the then Prime Minister of Jodhpur, got the lake constructed in 1872. This artificial lake is spread over 84 square kms. Where the lake now lies, was once an area having palaces and gardens of two rulers of Jodhpur. They were destroyed to make the Kaylana Lake. Near to the lake is a Dak Bungalow of PHED, the Irrigation department. There are also boating facilities available for the tourists here.

    The climate of Jodhpur is generally hot and arid but with a rainy season from late June to September (Köppen BWhw). Although the average rainfall is around 360 millimetres (14 in), it is extraordinarily variable. In the famine year of 1899, Jodhpur received only 24 millimetres (0.94 in), but in the flood year 1917 it received as much as 1,178 millimetres (46.4 in).

    Temperatures are extreme throughout the period from March to October, except when monsoonal rain produces thick clouds to lower it slightly. During these periods of heavy rain, however, the generally low humidity rises and this adds to the normal discomfort from the heat.

    Precaution to be taken near the region of desert safari :The afternoons are as hot as 30 degrees though later at night the temperature may drop down to as low as zero degrees. Thus you should be adequately equipped with the cotton and the woollen clothing. 
    Winter visitors
    will need one thick jacket/coat, socks, gloves and sweaters.
     Visitors need to carry light cotton clothing, sunscreen with at least 20 SPF, shady hats and sunglasses to combat the bright and hot summer sun.
