Kandy was first established by the King Wickramabahu. Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka is a major tourist destination. It famous for the temple of the tooth and many other temples the city could be called the cultural capital of the island. More than 50 elephants parade the city accompanied by the drummers, dancers and chieftains. It lies in the midst of hills in the Kandy valley which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka. Kandy is of both an administrative and religious city. It is built around a lake and the picturesque view of hills and abundance of cultural and historical treasures surrounded by the range of the mountains, Kandy is one of the ancient cities of Sri Lanka.

  • Religious Places:

    Adam's Peak: Its lying southeast of the city, Adam’s Peak is a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists and devotees of various other religions. The sacred mountain is also known as Sri Pada and its peak stands a lofty 7,360 feet above sea level, making it clearly visible from Nuwara Eliya and other towns and villages in the surrounding area. The mountain is considered sacred to Buddhists, muslims and hindus. ‘Hirusevaya’, a process involving the honouring of the Buddha, the affirmation of religious vows and the witnessing of the sunrise.

    The Hindagala Temple: Hindagala temple is picturesquely situated on a rock close to the University Campus at Peradeniya along the galaha road. Situated amidst the serene ambience of a location covered with long green trees and bounded by a cascading stream flowing through the forest.

    Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the sacred Tooth Relic): Dalada Maligawa or the temple of the sacred tooth relic in Kandy is the most venerated place of worship for Buddhists throughout the world.

    Lankatilake Temple: Lankatilake Temple is a 1.5km stroll along a path through the price paddies. It's a Buddhist and hindu temple with fine views of the countryside, featuring a buddha image, Kandy-period paintings, rock-face image, Kandy-period paintings, rock-face inscriptions and stone elephant figures.

    Gadaladeniya Temple: Gadaladeniya viharaya pilimatalawa, Kandy Built almost exclusively of stone in 1344 by the Gampola King Wicramabahu, situated on a hilltop, commanding views of the surrounding countryside. The entrance porch features large stone pillars which support a roof of huge stone slabs.cted food offerings for centuries.

    The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage: It was built in the year 1975. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage works with the aim of preserving the declining number of elephants in the region.The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Kandy is funded both by the Government and the willing tourists.

    Kandy is famous for its polos ambula (young jack fruit curry). This highly spiced dish is cooked for hours. Hath Maluwa another curry that roots from Kandy is rhubarb leaves in pickled curry.
