The Lakshadweep islands  lie on the Arabian Sea. Formerly the Laccadives, the Lakshadweep Islands are an archipelago of 36 exquisite coral islands, with untouched beaches and verdant coconut groves, scattered off the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea. Lakshadweep which means 100,000 islands is the smallest Union Territory in India. Kavaratti is the administrative capital of the Lakshadweep islands. Only two Islands, Bangaram and Kadmat, are open to foreigh visitors, while Indian visitors have a choice of six; all offer superb snorkelling and scuba-driving.

  • Lakshadweep Islands Geography and Climate

    Climate: Lakshadweep experiences a tropical climate. It rains here medium to heavy during the monsoon or from May to mid-September. You would never experience extreme climate here except rains and tropical storms in late summer that often results in heavy damage. 
    Geography: The Lakshadweep islands are a geographical extension of the Maldives island chain. Lakshadweep is just 220 to 440 km away from Malabar Coast of Kerala. It's located in 8º and 12º North latitude and 71º and 74º East longitude.


  • Best time to visit Lakshadweep Islands

    Note: One has to spend a night at Cochin to get entry permit to Lakshadweep if one lands in Cochin. If one is touching Delhi anytime before coming to Lakshadweep then the permit can also be obtained from Delhi and in that case one does not have to stay overnight in Cochin just to get the permit. The office remains open  from Monday to Friday.  Anyone who wishes to enter into  this Island should submit the following details:
     Nationality. Passport Details. Date and place of issue of the passport. Date of Expiry. Lakshadweep Permanent Address. Date and Place of Birth.
     During May to October is favourable to visit because of ship facilities are  also available at that time.

    Kalpeni Island in Lakshadweep: It is 287km from Cochin and has an area of 2.79sq km. It is a socially progressive island and it was here that girls first went to school when women's education was considered taboo.

    The Indian internal railway system is state-run by Indian Railways (tel: (011) 340 5156 or 334 6804; website: www.indianrail.gov.in). There are six classes of travel: first-class air conditioned, first-class sleeper, second-class air conditioned, second-class sleeper, third-class air conditioned and air conditioned chair car. Major trains carry restaurant cars.


  • How to reach Lakshadweep Islands by Air

    Cochin International Airport links Lakshadweep with the mainland. Cochin is served by Air India, Indian Airlines as well as many private airlines to many part of the country and to selected foreign destinations. Agatti is the only airport in Lakshadweep. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti to Bangaram Island Resort during monsoon and to Kavaratti through out the year.


  • How to reach Lakshadweep Islands by Water

    Four passenger ships- MV Tippu Sultan, MV Bharat Seema, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and Lakshadweep. The journey takes between 14 to 20 hours. The ships offer different classes of accommodation; A/C Deluxe Class with two berth cabins, A/C First Class with four berth cabins and Tourist Class with A/C seating. Cafeteria and snack bars, entertainment lounge, video shows, etc are also offered in MV Tipu Sultan and MV Bharat Seema. Comfortable A/C accommodation is offered by MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy. The ship services are available during Monsoons, that is between 15th May to October 15th.

    Minicoy is one of the largest lagoons in Lakshadweep. Minicoy is renowned for its traditional dance called the Lava Dance and is usually performed on festive occasions.

    Most of the population speaks Malayalam, but people on Minicoy island speak Mahl which is spoken in Maldives also. Minicoy is culturally very different from other islands. Tourism is also an emerging industry and provides employment to many.

    Kalpeni: It is 287km from Cochin and has an area of 2.79sq km. The main monument at Kalpeni is the Moidin Mosque that has walls made of coral. A peculiar feature of Kalpeni is a huge storm bank of coral debris along its eastern and southeastern shorelines. It is believed that a violent storm in 1847 threw up huge coral boulders along these shores.
